Postcolonial Analysis Series of TV/Online Ads – Coca-Cola: America is Beautiful

These advertisements features different people from differrent races singing a song titles “America is Beautiful”. The advertisement, that lasts longer than a minute features singer of different races, singing the song in different languages. Some include, Hindi, Senegalese-French, Hebrew, Mandarin, Keres, Arabic, Filipino and English. The playlist named #AmericaIsBeautiful features the girls from different races singing the song in their native languages. Although there is indeed an attempt to include various people from different races around the world, it is ironic that the song is indeed glorification of America. Made for TV Movie: High School Musical (2006)

High School Musical is a made for TV movie that aired on Disney Channel in 2006. High School Musical is a movie that revolves around Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez (played by Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens.) The High School Musical had great success during its run, eventually leading to the creation of High School Musical 2 and 3. Troy Bolton is East High School’s basketball star player whose father is the basketball team coach. Gabriella is a chemistry genius, who wants to start anew, that just transferred to East High because of her mom. The two first meet at a New Year’s Eve party where they sang together. Conflicts arise when Troy and Gabriella are both faced with the choice of choosing to pursue their passion for singing (a duet in the school’s Winter Musical) or to stick with their own “status quos.”

Narrative Analysis/Intertextuality: Glee Season 5, Episode 3 (“The Quarterback”)

Glee is a musical-comedy drama series that airs internationally on Fox and locally on ETC. The series is set in McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio and focuses on the stories of the members of the McKinley High Glee Club. This particular episode is the tribute episode to Cory Monteith, the actor who plays Finn Hudson: the male lead character of Glee. Monteith died on July 2013, during the season break of Glee. His untimely death forced the creators of Glee to make changes to its storyline. On October 10, 2013, “The Quarterback” was aired.
